WINDOW STYLES
Picture Windows
The clearest view a window can give. Picture windows don’t open, which means no operating hardware, no seal lines, just glass framed for the view.

Picture windows are fixed (non-operating) and built for one job: framing a view. Without the hardware, sash joints, and weatherstripping that operating windows need, picture windows can be made larger, with slimmer frames and the lowest air-leakage rating of any window style. They’re also the most energy-efficient option per square foot of glass, which makes them a smart choice for walls of glass where you want light and view without ventilation needs.
Why pictures are different
Every other window in our lineup has a moving sash, hardware, and a seal where the sash meets the frame. A picture window has none of that. The glass is sealed permanently into the frame, which means zero air leakage and a structure that can be made much larger than any operating window. The tradeoff is no ventilation.
Where picture windows fit best
Anywhere the priority is the view, not the airflow. Living rooms, dining rooms, stairwell landings, and any wall where you want a large expanse of glass framing the outside. They’re also common as the centerpiece of multi-window assemblies, with operating windows (typically awnings or casements) flanking or sitting above for ventilation.
Size and configuration
Picture windows can be made much larger than operating windows because there’s no sash weight to support. We can also configure them in shapes that operating windows can’t manage: extra-wide, extra-tall, or in custom geometric shapes for architectural projects. For very large picture windows we’ll discuss glass packages that handle the thermal stress of a big single pane.
Pairing with operating windows
The most common pattern is a large picture window in the middle with operating windows alongside or above. This gives you a clean view through the picture pane plus ventilation through the smaller flanking units. Matching the series across all the windows in the assembly keeps the frame profile and finish consistent.
Series we install in this category
Every series we install offers picture windows. Because picture windows often anchor a larger assembly with operating windows alongside, we usually match the series across all the windows in the project for consistency.

Which one is right for you?
Picture windows are typically chosen to match the operating windows around them. If your casements are Tuscany, the picture window in the assembly is usually Tuscany too. If you’re doing a wall of glass with no operating windows nearby, the choice opens up to whatever frame profile and material suit the architecture. For large dramatic picture windows, Ultra fiberglass and A250 aluminum offer the slimmest sightlines. For maximum energy performance on a big pane, West Pro 700 with triple-pane glass is the top pick.
Common questions
No moving parts means no air-leakage paths. Operating windows have weatherstripping that’s effective but never perfectly airtight. A picture window’s glass is sealed permanently into the frame, with no seam for air to leak through. That’s why picture windows always have the lowest air-leakage ratings of any style and the best U-factor per square foot of glass.
Yes, much larger than is possible with operating windows. Without a moving sash to support, the frame can carry significantly bigger glass. The exact maximum depends on the series and glass package, since large panes need to handle thermal expansion and wind loading. We’ll calculate the right glass spec for any size during your consultation.
Modern Low-E glass with warm-edge spacers significantly reduces condensation compared to older single-pane or basic dual-pane windows. The lower the U-factor of the glass package, the less condensation you’ll see. For very large picture windows in cold weather, condensation can still occur in rooms with high indoor humidity (kitchens, bathrooms), but modern picture windows are dramatically improved over older versions.
Essentially none beyond occasional glass cleaning. With no moving parts, hardware, or sash mechanisms, there’s nothing to lubricate, adjust, or replace. The frame material itself (vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum, or wood-clad) follows the same maintenance pattern as on operating windows of the same series.
Yes, this is common in remodels. If you have an old double hung or slider that’s mostly used for view rather than ventilation, swapping it for a picture window gives you a much cleaner view and better energy performance. We’ll measure the opening and confirm structural fit during your consultation.
