WINDOW MATERIALS
Vinyl Windows
The most popular window material in the Pacific Northwest, and for good reason. Vinyl is durable, energy-efficient, low-maintenance, and friendly to most budgets.

Vinyl is the workhorse window material. It doesn’t rot, it doesn’t need painting, and it stands up to wet winters and warm summers without complaint. For most replacement projects in Puget Sound, vinyl is the right place to start your shopping. The question isn’t usually whether to choose vinyl, it’s which series to pick.
Why most homeowners choose vinyl
Vinyl is made from PVC, the same material used in plumbing pipes and house siding. That means it’s chemically resistant to moisture, doesn’t corrode, and requires no painting or sealing over its lifetime. The frame is multi-chambered, which traps air pockets that improve insulation and reduce heat transfer. Modern vinyl is also impressively rigid, so frames hold their shape over decades.
What vinyl is good at
Energy efficiency is where vinyl really shines. The material itself is a poor conductor of heat, so the frame doesn’t drain warmth out of your home the way old aluminum frames did. Combined with modern Low-E glass packages, today’s vinyl windows can dramatically lower heating and cooling bills. Vinyl is also forgiving in terms of installation tolerance, which means a clean fit on older homes with out-of-square openings.
Where vinyl has limits
Vinyl frames are thicker than aluminum or fiberglass for the same structural strength. If your design goal is the slimmest possible frame profile and the largest possible glass area, fiberglass or aluminum will get you there better. Color choice is also more constrained on vinyl, especially for darker shades. Co-extruded black vinyl is the modern solution to that, but it’s a premium option.
How long does vinyl last
A quality vinyl window installed correctly should last 25 to 40 years. The proprietary Milgard, Cascade, and Ply Gem vinyl formulas resist UV degradation, color fading, and warping. The first thing to fail is usually the seal on the insulating glass unit, which is a separate component covered under glass warranties. The vinyl frame itself almost never fails.

Common questions
Yes. Modern vinyl with Low-E glass and warm-edge spacers performs well above current ENERGY STAR thresholds. Most of the vinyl series we carry are ENERGY STAR qualified in every U.S. climate zone, including ours. The bigger energy variable is whether the windows are installed correctly and whether you upgrade to Low-E2 or triple-pane glass.
Quality vinyl from Milgard, Cascade, or Ply Gem is engineered with UV inhibitors built into the material itself, so the color is consistent through the frame, not just on the surface. Cheaper vinyl windows from lesser brands can yellow or fade, but the series we carry are warranted against that for the lifetime of the original owner.
Fiberglass is stronger, expands and contracts less with temperature, and tends to last longer. Vinyl is more affordable, more readily available, and adequate for most homeowners. If you plan to stay in the home 15 plus years and want the most durable option, fiberglass is worth the upgrade. For shorter horizons or tighter budgets, premium vinyl gets you most of the way there.
Yes. Several of the series we carry offer co-extruded black exteriors and even matching black interiors, including Trinsic, West Pro 700, and the Cascade Series Cap Stock option. The black is fused to the vinyl during manufacturing, which means it won’t peel or fade. This is a current trend in remodel projects.
It varies by series. Tuscany has Milgard’s Full Lifetime Warranty including glass breakage, transferable up to 10 years to a new owner. Cascade Series and WinPro have Cascade’s Lifetime Warranty for the original owner. Style Line and West Pro 700 have Limited Lifetime Warranties with their own terms. We’ll provide the specific warranty document for any series you’re considering.
