Vinyl vs. Fiberglass vs. Wood Windows: What Works Best in Washington?

Choosing replacement windows for a Washington home involves more than selecting a color and operating style. Frame material affects maintenance, appearance, strength, moisture resistance, thermal performance, and cost. Wood Windows: Traditional Character With More Upkeep

Wood remains a popular choice for historic homes, custom architecture, and interiors where a natural stained or painted finish is important. It insulates relatively well and can be manufactured in a wide range of shapes and profiles.

The tradeoff is maintenance. Unprotected wood can absorb moisture, and exterior finishes need to be inspected and renewed. Many modern wood windows use aluminum, fiberglass, or vinyl cladding on the exterior to reduce weather exposure while preserving the look of wood indoors.

Aluminum Windows: Slim Profiles Require the Right Design

Aluminum is strong, durable, and capable of creating narrow frames with large areas of glass. Traditional aluminum, however, conducts heat readily. For residential applications, look for products with an effective thermal break that separates the interior and exterior portions of the frame.

Thermally improved aluminum can suit contemporary homes, large openings, and some commercial-style designs. The complete NFRC-rated performance should be compared with other materials rather than assuming all aluminum products perform alike.

The Glass Package Matters as Much as the Frame

Frame material is only one part of a window’s performance. Double- or triple-pane insulated glass, low-emissivity coatings, gas fills, edge spacers, weather seals, and the operating style all affect comfort and energy use. A well-insulated frame paired with the wrong glass package may not meet the needs of a sunny west-facing room or a shaded north-facing bedroom.

Use the NFRC label to compare the complete window. U-factor measures heat transfer through the whole unit, while solar heat gain coefficient measures how much solar heat passes through it. Air-leakage ratings and ENERGY STAR climate-zone certification provide additional comparison points.

Even a premium window can underperform if the opening is not prepared, flashed, insulated, and sealed correctly. In Washington’s wet climate, the installation must integrate with the home’s weather-resistant barrier and exterior cladding. The goal is not merely to seal water out with caulk; it is to create layers that direct incidental water back to the exterior.
